Action against plastic:
My name is Skye, I’m 10 years old and I live on the West coast of Wales. I love rock climbing, growing cacti and making macrame pot hangers. I’m also a climate activist and love campaigning for change. I am running a campaign to ban plastics from comics and magazines, this started after I subscribed to a magazine (Horrible Histories) and when it arrived it was wrapped in plastic with a plastic blister package attached to it, with plastic tape and inside was a heap of plastic tat – it is literally just rubbish.
I wrote to the publishers who didn’t give a good reply so I started a petition on change.org I then sent out loads of emails and shared it onto social media. After a while the local newspaper ran a story, then my MP helped me get more attention. The BBC interviewed me and my campaign was mentioned on National Radio. A Manager from Waitrose heard about the campaign and agreed with me – then this week Waitrose announced that they would stop selling comics and magazines containing plastic tat – AMAZING!!! They are giving the publishers 8 weeks to change.
Since then I have been in loads of National Newspapers and even on live BBC TV – maybe you saw me, I got in a mention for KAP!!! I am now on the Junior Board of a big company that is doing a Recycle to Read scheme which is due to launch later this year. I am also working with Common Seas and their Ocean Plastics Academy to help inspire other young people to take positive action.
