Encouraging companies to use environmentally responsible packaging

 #PACKETin Explained

The Problem with Crisp Packets (and other packaged foods) is short and simple: they are packaged in packets that contain plastic.

Take a look at this graphic – it will make you think differently about your regular packet of crisps (and lots of other products as well, no doubt).

The foil/plastic bags keep the snacks nice and fresh, but once finished with they are not recycled.

Why not? Because they can’t be recycled! Well, this is not strictly true (cos in theory pretty much anything could be recycled), but the fact of the matter is snack packets aren’t recycled due to the costs incurred in separating the materials in the foil / plastic packet.

Responsibility and accountability

Just as it is our responsibility as a consumer to dispose of our waste responsibly, shouldn’t manufacturers take some responsibility for the post-use life of their products (by making them more easily recyclable or out of biodegradable materials, at least)?

We think they should … and perhaps you do too?

If so, then let’s use our power as consumers to get a simple message across to the crisp manufacturers: Pack-it-in using packaging that is non-recyclable!

It’s only fair that we give our feedback to companies if we are wanting them to change something we are not happy about. On this occasion, we are using their FREEPOST / returns address fairly as we have something we are genuinely unhappy about with their product (remember, the packaging is part of the product, not just its contents).

Together we can do our bit to bring about a much needed change.

Thanks for reading.

  • Sort the packaging into piles

  • Put the sorted packaging into envelopes and write on the appropriate FREEPOST address (see left for the list)

  • Write a polite letter explaining that you LOVE the product but LOATHE the non-recycling packaging, asking for them to use more environmentally friendly materials as soon as possible. Write the #PACKETin hashtag on the envelope before posting
